Or, How to recognize a failing police state faced with potential civil rights damages and falling revenue sources when no one wants to move there because of the corrupt government.
  • Planners OK annex 

  • A tense, standing-room-only crowd saw the Cookeville Planning Commission vote unanimously last night to annex a 1,200-acre area east of Cookeville, the latest and by far the largest of several annexations considered and approved this year. Some in the audience applauded -- but an apparently larger number did not -- and a few left visibly angry, commenting "This is not fair!" and "This is not democracy!" as they exited past the table around which the members of the commission sat. (August 29, 2000 12:15 PM CDT)
